The Farm

Mountain Falls is a small family farm located in the agricultural community of Sheffield, Massachusetts, in the southwestern corner of the state. The property sits on the flanks of the Taconic Mountains and boasts a beautiful view across the Housatonic River Valley towards the Berkshire Mountains. The Appalachian Trail runs along the mountain ridge above the farm. Bear Rock Stream, which descends over a massive cliff face forming the tallest waterfall in Massachusetts, crosses the property and provides water for farming operations – hence the name “Mountain Falls Farm”. The land has been farmed since the mid-1700’s.

Our HISTORY

Mountain Falls Farm LLC was founded in 2007 by Skip and Breeze Hobbs to bring a farm purchased by Breeze’s maternal grandfather in 1950 back to life after more than 30 years of dormancy.  For many decades the farm operated as one of the larger apple orchards in the region but ceased operations in the mid-1970s.

About 20 acres of partially over-grown fields were brush-hogged back to native grasses in which we now raise Belted Galloway beef cattle. An arrangement was made with a neighboring landowner to harvest his thirty acres of fields for winter hay.  An area 200 x 80 feet was fenced off in what had been called the #1 Orchard, to plant a vegetable garden, raspberries, grapes, and fruit trees.

OUR PHILOSPHY

Our goal from the beginning was to establish a small New England family farm using sustainable agricultural practices to feed our extended family healthy food, and sell to friends and the public.

Our cattle are grass-fed, pasture raised, and hormone and antibiotic free.  The only fertilizer we put on the garden is cow manure, wood ashes, the shells of all the shell fish we consume, and some agricultural lime. Insects and fungi are controlled with organic sprays and hand “bug picking”. We farm organically, but are not certified organic.

OUR PRODUCTS

Our meat, produce, honey and maple syrup are sold at the Salisbury, Connecticut Farmers Market on Saturdays; to local restaurants; and to friends and customers on our e-mail distribution list.  Products may be purchased at the farm by appointment. Rough-cut timber and cow manure is also available by special order.
